The Dolomites

My favourite flower is the gentian – that rich, vivid blue in a delicate, star-shaped crown of five petals. By a lucky coincidence – or, as I prefer to call it, serendipity – I booked myself in for a fortnight at the Hotel Genziana in Arabba, Italy, in June 2016. Maybe I should have guessed that ’Genziana’ meant ‘Gentian’ but I didn’t: I booked it because it had the best deal. So that was a good omen for my walking trip to the Dolomites. I chose Arabba from the map because it is centrally located for the walks I wanted to do and because it is high up, at the end of a valley and because it is away from the larger, more touristy towns such as Corvara, Ortisei, Cortina and Canazei (see: www.arabba.it). I was not disappointed. Here is a map showing the locations of the trails I followed.
